Our Mission

To prepare students to be good leaders, efficient initiators, and professional and proficient educators and translators.

Overview

The English Language and Literature Department is a department committed to the symbiotic relationship of teaching, research, translation and the current concerns of society. Entirely new areas of study such as Second Language Acquisition, English Linguistics and Audiovisual Translation have been added to the curriculum. Even in courses with the most traditional titles such as Historical Linguistics and Drama, the selection of texts as well as the way they are taught undergoes regular reassessment and alteration. So too does the department's effort to improve the quality of the communication skills of the students it teaches.

Aims and Objectives

Members of the department contribute to the teaching of interdisciplinary programs at the graduate level (literature, drama, poetry). Members of the department bring their interdisciplinary interests to their English courses, addressing such areas as the relationship between English literature and literature in other languages; historical linguistics of the English language and other languages, translation in media, and philosophy. In short, our concern is the place of a work of English studies in the culture of its time - and in ours - and with language and literature not only as a passive reflector, but as an active molder of culture.
